Jagannath Temple in Puri to remain shut for devotees four hours today, Know why

The famous Puri Jagannath temple is going to remain closed for four hours from 6 pm to 10 pm due to the Banaklagi ritual today.

Puri: The famous Puri Jagannath temple is going to remain closed for four hours due to the Banaklagi ritual today that is Wednesday, informed the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA).

According to sources, the Banakalagi Niti of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Goddess Subhadra will be performed at the Puri Srimandir today from 6 pm to 10 pm.

In view of this ritual, the public darshan shall be prohibited from 6 pm to 10 pm, informed SJTA. The ritual swill be performed by the Dutta Mohapatra Servitors and Khadiprasad Daetapati Servitors following ditiya bhoga.

This secret and special ritual holds a lot of significance in the tradition of the Srimandir. Banakalagi Niti or Shrimukha Sringara means applying fresh colours on the idols of the deities.

The Dutta Mohapatra Sevakas (Servitors) and Khadiprasad Daetapati Servitors perform the rituals by using different types of natural colors like Hingula, Haritala, Kasturi, Keshar, glue of Kaintha. These ingredients were used to prepare a Banaka, which was applied to Lord Jagannath and his siblings in Srimandir.
