New Delhi: With the whole of the state eagerly waiting for the return of separated Kandhamala conjoined twins Jaga-Balia to Odisha, health minister Pratap Jena on Friday ruled it out for the time being citing the health condition of Balia here.

Jena, who reviewed the health condition of the separated twins with the help of a five-member expert team from Odisha which accompanied him to New Delhi AIIMS, rather advised for few more days stays for Jaga and Balia in hospital before discharge.

The expert team had a detailed discussion with the doctors treating the twins and zeroed in on their stay in the hospital for a while.

“We are very happy that Jaga has improved a lot. But as far as Balia is concerned his health condition is not up to the mark so far. He needs more medical care for which we have requested the AIIMS authorities,” said Jena while talking to media.

On a question whether Jaga could be discharged alone taking into account his health condition the minister maintained that all other options are under consideration.

“We would examine first whether it would be feasible to discharge only Jaga from the hospital or not,” he added.

The five-member expert team which accompanied Jena to AIIMS comprised of Rashmi Mohanty, Associate Professor, Medicine, AIIMS, Bhubaneswar; Sanjeeb Mishra, HOD, Neurosurgery; Prithviraj Singh, Assistant Professor, Plastic Surgery; Jagmohan Mishra, Professor, Surgery of SCBMCH and Saroj Satapathy, Superintendent, Sishu Bhavan.

The conjoined twins were born to Pushpanjali Kanhara and Bhuiya Kanhara on April 9, 2015 at Milipada village in Kandhamal district. Their story came to light after Kalinga TV aired a special program based on them in its ‘Kalinga Bandhu’ program on two occasions, first on November 2016 and then on June 7, 2017.

After the Odisha Government’s initiatives the twins were separated after a two-phase surgery at AIIMS, New Delhi which were conducted on August 28 and October 25 last year. Since then they are showing improvement under the supervision of an expert team at the hospital.
