Hyderabad: Australian star David Warner on Wednesday stepped down as captain of Indian Premier League (IPL) team Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). This year, the IPL season is scheduled to begin on April 7.

“In light of recent events, David Warner has stepped down as captain of SunRisers Hyderabad. The new captain of the Team will be announced shortly,” said SRH CEO K.Shanmugam.

The decision comes in the wake of the ball-tampering scandal that has rocked the Australian cricket team on their tour of South Africa.

Warner, the explosive left-handed opener, had played a leading role for SRH. He led SRH to the IPL crown in 2016.

Earlier Steve Smith, who was also involved in the ball-tampering controversy, resigned as captain of Rajasthan Royals (RR). Meanwhile, Ajinkya Rahane has been appointed as captain of RR this season.

Both Smith and Warner were retained by SRH and RR respectively at a sum of over Rs 12 crore each.
