Baripada: Police yesterday arrested a man on charges of duping gullible locals of lakhs in Sukhuasahi village under Udala tehsil in Mayurbhanj district by posing as Revenue Inspector (RI) yesterday.
The accused identified as Laxmidhar Murmu had collected huge sum of money from landless villagers by promising them to issue land records and later handed over the same to them. He had collected Rs 2,000 per beneficiary for the recods. Similarly, he had also issued Caste and Residential Certificates to a few others in the area.
The issue came to fore and the accused was taken into custody by Udala Police after the beneficiaries found the land records to be fake from online sources.
The accused is being interrogated by police and an investigation is underway into the incident.
