Bhubaneswar: Odisha government will file Certificate Case against 56 companies for mining illegally and not paying the compensation. It has initiated action to collect compensation to the tune of nearly Rs 7,700 crore from the defaulting lessees. This apart, the government has also decided to confiscate their properties if they fail to pay the penalty.

Gandhamardan Sponge Industries (237 crore), National Enterprises (194 crore), D.C.Das (18 crore), Sarada Mines (1938 crore), Dr. S.Pradhan-1 (123 crore), Dr. S.Pradhan-2 (93 crore), T.B. Lal and Co (93 crore), B.K. Mohanty (384 crore) and Mid East Int.Steel Ltd (924 crore) are among the 42 defaulting lessees who will have to cough-up the compensation.

The state government will take action against the illegal mining companies under the Odisha Public Demands Recovery Act and their property will be attached for recovery of the penalty if they fail to make payment within two months.

The Additional Secretary has written a letter to the Principal Secretary of Revenue & DM Department and Director of Mines on recovery of the compensation. Besides, he has directed them to furnish details of the immovable, movable properties, business, vehicles and PAN details for necessary action against the defaulting lessees.

Notably, the state government had issued notices to 131 mining lease holders last year after the Supreme Court in August 2017 directed the mining lease holders to pay 100 per cent penalty within December 31, 2017 for excess and illegal mining.

Odisha state government had collected over Rs 10,000 crore as penalty from defaulting mining companies against a total of Rs 17,576 crore.
