Bhubaneswar: Weather scientist HR Biswas has been appointed as the new Director of the city-based Regional Meteorological Centre.

Biswas, the Director of Kolkata MeT Centre, will take charge from the outgoing Director Dr. Sarat Chandra Sahoo on June 1.

Sahoo, who is retiring on May 31, served 14 years as the Director of the MeT office here. He is the longest serving weatherman among 14 scientists appointed as the director at Bhubaneswar MeT Centre since 1973.

Odisha government, based on the forecast by Sahoo, had successfully tackled the situation during the cyclones Phailin and Hudhud that hit the state in 2013 and 2014 respectively.
