Hirakud opens 7 more gates, Brahmani and Baitarani rivers in spate

Sambalpur: Keeping in view the incessant rain which continues to lash the upper catchment areas of the Mahanadi, the Hirakud Dam authorities today opened seven more gates to release floodwater.

The move was taken to maintain the reservoir water level at 619-620 ft against a total storage capacity of 630 ft.

With the opening of the new gates today water is flowing through 14 gates at the dam currently while the reservoir water level remained at 620.89 ft by 8.00 am today.

Apart from Mahanadi other major rivers in the State like Brahmani and Baitarani are also in spate after being fed by heavy rain.

While river Brahmani is flowing at 177.13 meters against a danger level of 178.42 at Panposh, river Baitarani is flowing at 17.17 meters against the danger mark of 17.83 at Akhuapada, says reports.
