Hirakud dam opens 2 more gates to release floodwater

Sambalpur: Taking into account the rising water level at the reservoir, the Hirakud dam authorities today opened two more sluice gates to release the surplus water.

The decision to open the gates was taken this morning after incessant rain in the upper catchment areas of Mahanadi fed the dam last night.

Currently, 53,230 cusecs of water is being released from the dam through a total of 4 gates against an inflow of 91,349 cusecs per second.

The water level at Hirakud remained at 625.75 ft against the optimal storage capacity of 630 ft by 10.00 am today.
