Bhubaneswar: A hardcore criminal sustained bullet injuries in a police encounter at Baramunda High School Field under Khandagiri police limits in Bhubaneswar on Wednesday night.
The hardcore criminal has been identified as Chakara Barik.
Based on a piece of reliable information about the assembly of 6 to 7 dreaded criminals under the leadership of the Chakara Barik and his associate, armed with lethal weapons like pistol,hand bomb, and other sharped weapons in Baramunda High School Field, Khandagiri police and Special Squad immediately swung into action.
After the police team reached Baramunda field, the accused criminals immediately threw hand bombs at the police team and also simultaneously open fire. In self-defense, the police team resorted to controlled fire.
In this encounter, the dreaded criminal Chakara Barik has been injured, and the rest accused managed to escape on bikes taking advantage of the night darkness. Two police personnel were also injured during the encounter. Their condition was reported to be stable, informed Bhubaneswar DCP Prateek Singh.
Chakara was admitted to Capital Hospital here and later shifted to SCB Medical College & Hospital in Cuttack. He has sustained bullet injuries on his right leg and has been taken for a surgery.
Notably, there are more than 20 criminal cases pending, including snatching, looting, burglary, looting, firing on NH passengers, with the Commissionerate of Police against Chakara Barik. He was the most wanted criminal of Khandagiri, Nayapalli, Bharatpur, Sahidnagar, and Chandrasekharpur police stations under the Commissionerate of Police.
The police team has initiated a manhunt to apprehend other criminals who have fled away from the spot on Wednesday night.
