Rayagada: The Rayagada District Court on Thursday upheld the ‘death sentence’ verdict of the nine convicts in the sensational triple murder case which took place at Kitung village of the district in 2016.

According to reports, the court today conducted a hearing in the case following the direction of the Orissa High Court. The HC had asked the lower court to reconsider its death sentence verdict given to the convicts.

The High Court had given the direction after the convicts approached it seeking reconsideration of their death sentence verdict.

It is to be noted here that the convicts identified as Ajanta Sabara, Bubhuna Sabara, Maluku Sabara, Podantu Sabara, Iru Sabara, Lakia Sabara, Degun Sabara, Dasanta Sabara and Dalsa Sabara attacked three members of a family in Kitung village under Putasingh police station in Rayagada district on September 9, 2016.

They killed Asina Sabara, his wife Amai and elder daughter Ashamani over allegedly practicing sorcery and buried their bodies in a nearby forest. Later, they dug out the bodies and set those to fire to destroy evidence.

However, police soon swung into action and arrested ten people including a minor boy. The Gunupur ADJ court on April 13, 2019 had convicted nine persons and awarded them death sentence.
