Rourkela: In what can be considered as a shocking news, the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Department of Odisha has served a notice to a driver residing in Sector-20 area of Rourkela asking him to pay Rs 4 crore fine.
The GST department has reportedly served the notice to the driver, who has been identified as Rajendra Pallai, in connection with a GST fraud of Rs 28.28 Crore which is done by the company RP Enterprises. The company has been reportedly opened in his name.
While speaking about the matter, CT & GST Officer, Cuttack Central said that Rajendra received taxable goods amounting to Rs 23,96,64,843 and availed Input Tax credit of Rs 2,15,69,836 under CGST and 2,15,69,836 under SGST respectively on the strength of tax invoice during January 2018.
“In the course of the investigation into the business activities of the said taxpayer, it was ascertained that the concerned taxable entity is a nonexistent one. As the supplier is nonexistent, the ITC availed on the strength of the invoices issued by such taxpayer is fake and without the actual receipt of goods. Hence ITC claimed on the strength of such fake invoices is subject to penal action under Section 74 of the Odisha GST Act 2017,” the notice stated.
Rajendra, on the other hand, is clueless of the fraud. He said that the officials from GST Department had conducted raids in his house earlier over the issue; however, they did not get any proof. But now the driver is surprised after getting a notice of Rs 4 crore.
