Group Clash: 4 critical in bomb hurling, firing in Puri village

Puri: At least four persons sustained critical injury and an unspecified number of people were hurt in a pitched battle which erupted between residents of Baghamunda and Sipakuda village under Brahmagiri Police Station here today, over a long standing dispute over prawn gheri (enclosure) and a tourism jetty construction.

The injured have been identified as Rabindra Pradhan, Janmenjay Pradhan, Prakash Pradhan, Satyapriya Pradhan of Baghamunda village.

It all started with a heated exchange of words between two separate groups from Baghamunda and Sipakuda villages at around 6 AM, while the construction of the tourism jetty was underway at Kiansi. As the verbal duel escalated further, a group of residents from Sipakuda village torched boats kept at the jetty and hurled bombs targeting the Baghamunda villagers. They also fired several rounds of bullets during the attack in which at least four Baghamunda villagers were grievously hurt.

A bloody group clash erupted on the spot after Baghamunda villagers retaliated with bomb hurling. Both the groups hurled around 100 bombs during the clash.

While the injured were rushed to Rebana Nuagaon Community Health Centre (CHC) following the incident, they were later shifted to Puri DHH due to unavailability of doctors.

Police said a number of injured of Sipakuda have failed to reach hospital due to the on going violence in the area and efforts are on to rescue them.
