Good Samaritan returns valuables worth Rs 2 lakh

DCP, Cuttak felicitates Bijayananda Mohanty for the inspiring act

Cuttack: A 50-year-old teacher was felicitated today by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Cuttack, Akhileshvar Singh for returning valuables worth Rs 2 lakh to its rightful owner, which he had found near Salipur.

The vanity bag belonging to the wife of a police constable Sridhar Sahoo working with the DCP office in Cuttack accidentally fell on May 13 when she was on her way to Salipur. The bag contained cash and gold ornaments worth Rs 2 lakh and several important documents.

The worried couple tried to search the bag but in vain. The constable after spending a sleepless night received a call the next day. It was Bijayananda Mohanty the Good Samaritan, on the other side of the phone who told him that he found the lost bag with all articles, including cash and ornaments intact. Mohanty a teacher by profession subsequently returned the vanity bag (along with all the items in it including cash) to the constable in Cuttack.

A few days ago Cuttack DCP came to know about the incident and decided to felicitate Mohanty for his selfless and inspiring act.

Narrating about the incident Mohanty said, “On that day I was passing through the area when found the vanity bag with the valuables. I opened it and found an identity card with a phone number. I contacted the person and verified whether he was the real owner. I asked him his address and handed over the vanity bag.”

Singh, on the other hand, said that similar incidents are rare in society. “The selfless act of Mohanty proved that humanity still exists in society. It was a small effort on our part to acknowledge his noble deed,” said Singh.
