Bhubaneswar: The children will receive needle free Covid vaccination soon in Odisha. Reportedly, two vaccines for children, aged between 2-18, have been suggested out of which Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin has been granted emergency use approval by Drugs and Comptroller General of India (DCGI).
Odisha Government will begin the training to vaccinate children against COVID-19 from today, informed Health and Family Welfare Director Bijay Panigrahi. “There are 1,40,00,000 children in the state to be vaccinated. If we start vaccinating all of them at the same time, we will have to expand the vaccination centers,” said Panigrahi. He also said that the vaccination program for children will begin as soon as they get directed.
“As many children are afraid to receive the injection, they will be given the vaccinates through forma depth technology. We will begin the process once we receive the special SOP for the same,” he said.
As of now, 3,50,00,000 doses of Covid vaccine have been given in the State including 2,47,00,000 doses of first dose (78%) and 1,03,00,000 doses of second dose (33%).
The vaccination program are being conducted at 1830 centres today in Odisha. Currently, there are 24 lakhs vaccine doses in the State.
Earlier this month, Hyderabad-based pharma major Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin received emergency use approval for children in the age group of 2 to 18 years from the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGA). The Subject Expert Committee on Covid-19 gave the approval for the emergency use in the children.
The emergency use authorisation, however, is subject to certain conditions. The developer of Covaxin will continue the study as per Whole Virion, Inactivated Corona Virus Vaccine the approved clinical trial protocol.
Meanwhile, the WHO is yet to grant emergency use authorisation to Covaxin. Bharat Biotech had reportedly submitted all documents required for the listing to the WHO by July 9.
