Bhubaneswar: In yet another boost to the wildlife conservation in Odisha, as many as 30 gharial hatchlings were reportedly spotted in the fresh waters of Satkosia gorge in the Mahanadi river. The gharial numbers have grown naturally for the second consecutive years.

Last year, a total of 28 hatchlings were spotted in the Mahanadi River, in the Baladamara area near Satkosia range for the first time since they were introduced in Odisha’s rivers back in 1975.

The gharial hatchlings were sighted in Satkosia gorge only because of the sustained efforts of the employees of the Forest and Environment Department.

Meanwhile, the Forest Department has initiated a round-the-clock vigil for the safety of the gharial hatchlings.

It is to be noted here that Odisha is the only State in India to have three species of crocodiles. It has freshwater gharials (Gavialis gangeticus) at Satakosiya in Mahanadi, mugger crocodiles (Crocodylus palustris) in Similipal and saltwater crocodiles in Bhitarkanika National Park.
