Gold worth Rs 8 lakh seized at Bhubaneswar Airport

Bhubaneswar: The officials of the Air Intelligence Unit of Customs seized gold worth over 8 lakh rupees from a passenger at the Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) here in Odisha.

The market value of the seized gold weighing 254.47 grams has been estimated about Rs. 8, 20,156, Customs officials claimed.

The accused passenger was detained after customs officials found his activities suspicious. He arrived in the temple city by an Air India flight A1-399 from Bangkok in the intervening night of 21st/22nd December 2018.

According to reports, the accused had concealed the gold in his rectum in form of powder wrapped in black tape and polythene like capsules.

“After opening the suspected items in which gold was mixed in powder form”, a Customs official said. “Treatment of the brown paste in laboratory resulted into gold”, he added.
