Gold Bars Worth Over Rs 23 Lakh Seized At Biju Patnaik International Airport

Bhubaneswar: The Custom Department’s Air Intelligence Unit on Sunday seized five gold bars worth over Rs. 23.89 lakh from a lady passenger at Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) in Bhubaneswar.

The woman, who hails from Maharashtra, had arrived by an Air Asia flight from Dubai via New Delhi. Acting on a tip-off, the customs officials searched the luggage of the woman and seized the gold bars weighing around 707.670 gram. As the value of the seized yellow metal was more than 20 lakh, the woman was arrested.

The authorities revealed that the gold bars were concealed in her rectum in three capsules wrapped with black adhesive tape. The smuggled gold has been seized under the Custom Act, 1962.

Notably, this is the second case of seizure of smuggled gold in the last 15 days at Biju Patnaik International Airport. On February 19, nine pieces of gold bars worth Rs. 33,16,579 were seized by custom officials at the Airport.
