Gold articles of 545gms seized from female passenger in Bhubaneswar Airport

Bhubaneswar: The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of the Customs at the Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) seized gold articles of 545 grams from a Non -Resident Indian (NRI) woman here on Sunday.

The gold articles, which included 27 rings, 4 bangles and a chain, were recovered from two out of the 50 ladies handbags which the woman passenger, who arrived from Bangkok, was carrying. While the woman was travelling with a Thai passport, the gold items were given silver coating to avoid its recognition.

The value of the seized gold items is said to be Rs 17.88 lakhs. Interrogation of the detained woman is on.

This is the third seizure of gold items at the airport within 22 days. Earlier on April 9, 700 grams of gold worth around Rs 22 lakh being smuggled inside a mixer grinder was seized. Likewise, the AIU of the Customs at the city airport had seized 180 grams gold worth Rs 5.66 lakh on April 1.
