Malkangiri: Acting tough on illegal hemp growers in the district, a joint team of Malkangiri Excise and police officials destroyed a sprawling 36 acres of ganja cultivation in Badapadar panchayat under Chitrakonda police limits on Wednesday.

The raid was conducted after the Excise Department got specific information on the ganja cultivators in RSC-12 and Palaspadar villages in the block. The team of officials led by Excise official Ashok Sethi, Malkangiri SDPO Prateek Singh and Chitrakonda Police Station IIC Ajit Swain torched ganja trees reaching the villages.

Informing on the step, Excise Department sources said the destroyed ganja would cost well over Rs 7 crore. More raids would be conducted in Chitrakonda block in future as it is being suspected that the hemp growers are taking advantage of these villages which happen to be Maoist infested, it added.
