Gang-rape of West Bengal girl in Odisha: 2 suspects detained

Puri: Konark police in Odisha detained two persons in connection with the gang-rape of a girl from West Bengal for 10 days in confinement in Odisha’s Konark Market Complex in the district.

Puri Additional SP Gagarin Mohanty confirmed the detention and said that police are interrogating the duo to extract more details about the incident.

The detention came a day after the survivor was rescued from a locked room by the police and fire personnel.

The victim alleged that she was repeatedly gang-raped by around 15 persons for 10 days after being kept in confinement in the house. Besides, she was allegedly forced into prostitution.

The matter came to light after some locals heard the 25-year-old girl from Kolkata crying for help from the roof of a locked house and informed the police yesterday.

Initially the victim was rushed to Gop Community Health Centre (CHC) before being shifted to Puri District Headquarters Hospital.

Narrating about her ordeal, the victim said, “A girl named Kajal brought me here on the pretext of job a year ago. However, Kajal and his male friend later forced me into prostitution. When I asked them to leave me they did not, not even for a single day to go to my house.”

“A youth named Subash Behera abducted me and held in captivity in the house, where he and several other persons took turns to rape me for 10 day. Police should arrest them and punish them according to the law,” she added.

The local police had also recovered some Aadhar cards from the room and launched a manhunt to arrest the accused involved in the crime.

Meanwhile, the women wings of Odisha BJP and Congress met the victim separately at Puri hospital and demanded the arrest of the accused persons and stringent action against them.

Besides, they urged the state government to provide free medical treatment to the victim.
