Gandhi, Naidu file nomination for Vice Presidential polls

Venkaiah Naidu and Gopal Krishna Gandhi file nominations for Vice Presidential pollsNew Delhi: UPA’s nominee Gopal Krishna Gandhi and NDA’s nominee Venkaiah Naidu filed their nominations for the upcoming Vice Presidential polls in New Delhi on Tuesday.

Flanked by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP President Amit Shah and several other top notch leaders, including LK Advani, of the BJP, Naidu filed the nominations.

“I am honoured to be a candidate for Vice President of India. I have been engaged in public life for over four decades. I lost my mother at a very young age and have treated my party as my mother and they have brought me to this level. India’s strength lies in Parliamentary democratic system. It will be my endeavour to strengthen that further,” an emotional Naidu said after filing his nomination.

Gopal Krishna Gandhi filed his nomination in the presence of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress President Sonia Gandhi.

“I am not here to oppose any person or party, I am here with all humility to place before electors the aspirations of the citizens,” said Gandhi, who is being targeted by the opposition for his views on the death penalty to Yakub Memon.

“I believe death penalty belongs to medieval ages and it’s wrong. My views are inspired by Mahatma Gandhi and Dr Ambedkar,” he said.
