Gambling den busted in Cuttack district, 5 arrested

Cuttack: As many as five people have been arrested after a surprise raid was conducted in the middle of the forest in the Cuttack district while the gambling was being organized.

Reportedly, the Cuttack District Commissionerate Police conducted a raid on the gambling den.

Acting on a tip-off, the Chaudhwar police raided inside a farmhouse in the forest in the middle of Mahisalanda-Dudhianali. Gambling was being played in an innovative way using chickens.

All of them have been arrested, a case has been filed against the arrested gamblers and been forwarded to the court, added reports. More than 10 people managed to escape from the spot.

It is to be noted that earlier in November, the Orissa High Court had issued a notice in a case filed against the Odisha Prevention of Gambling Act of 1955 and seeking permission to gamble through online games. The case was filed by an online gaming company showing that the provisions of this law should be declared unconstitutional.

Gambling is banned in Odisha. Under the Odisha Prevention of Gambling Act, 1955, the State government has declared gambling as illegal and made it a punishable offense. However, in some parts of the country people are gambling via various online platforms.

According to Odisha Prevention of Gambling Act, whoever takes part in gambling in common gaming – house shall be punishable with imprisonment which may extend to six months or with fine which may extend to one thousand rupees or with both and any person found in any common gaming – house during any gaming or playing therein shall be presumed until the contrary be proved to have been there for the purpose of gaming and to have taken part therein.
