Bhubaneswar: Naib Subedar Nuduram Soren has been accorded the Vir Chakra posthumously by President Ram Nath Kovind today. The award has been given for his gallant actions against the vicious attack by the Chinese Army in the Galwan valley in June last year as part of the Operation Snow Leopard.

Reportedly, his wife received the award from President Kovind.

Martyr Nuduram Soren belonged to Mayurbhanj district of Odisha. He was one of the 20 soldiers who was martyred at the Galwan valley along the India-China border during a violent border clash with the Chinese troops in 2020.

Soren was part of the 16th Bihar regiment. He was targeted by the enemy soldiers with lethal and sharp weapons and he showed raw courage, fought with resolute spirit before succumbing to his injuries. Soren is survived by his wife and three daughters.

It is to be noted that earlier on Monday, Indian Air Force ace pilot Group Captain Abhinandan Varthaman was awarded the Vir Chakra by President Kovind. He was captured by the Pakistani Army on February 27, 2019 after his MiG-21 Bison jet was shot down in a dogfight with Pakistani jets. Before his jet was hit, he downed a Pakistani F-16 fighter.

The ‘Balakot Air Strike’ was carried out at terror camps at Balakot of Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in response to the deadly Pulwama attack that claimed the lives of 40 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel. It was the first aerial assault carried out by India in Pakistan after the 1971 Indo-Pakistan war.
