Nitin-GadkariNew Delhi: Union Minister for Road Transport, Highways and Shipping Nitin Gadkari has asked the carmakers to opt for alternative fuels for pollution check in the country in the annual convocation of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers in New Delhi on Thursday.

“Petrol and diesel vehicles will need to make way for electric powertrains and engines running on other fuel variants such as ethanol and biofuels”, the Minister said asking the carmakers to carry out research for electric vehicles.

“I appeal the makers of petrol or diesel engine vehicles to innovate, research and work on new technologies as to find alternative transport solutions”, he added.

The Minister also said that the government plans to come out with a platform or an app – on the lines of Uber and Ola – that would facilitate the use of two-wheelers as a taxi in order to cut down on use of cars, especially in small towns.

Many car manufacturers including Audi have recently stated that they are gearing up to bring electric cars in India by 2020 though infrastructure is a big problem.
