From possible wind speed to damages in Odisha, here’s all you need to know about latest update of Cyclone JAWAD 

Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) in its latest bulletin forecasted the possible wind speed to damage the impending Cyclone JAWAD to make in Odisha.

“The Well Marked Low-Pressure Area over the southeast Bay of Bengal moved west northwestwards, concentrated into a Depression and lay centered at 17.30 hrs IST of today, the 2 nd December 2021, over the southeast Bay of Bengal near Lat. 11.0°N and Long. 89.0°E, about 960 km south-southeast of Vishakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), 1020 km south-southeast of Gopalpur (Odisha) & 1060 km south-southeast of Paradip (Odisha),” the IMD said.

“It is likely to move northwestwards and intensify into a Cyclonic Storm over central parts of the Bay of Bengal during the next 24 hours. It is likely to reach the west-central Bay of Bengal off north Andhra Pradesh-south Odisha coasts around 4th December morning. Thereafter it is likely to move north-northeastwards,” it added.

Warnings:

(i) Rainfall (warning graphics enclosed)

On 3rd December: Light to moderate rainfall at many places with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places over south coastal Odisha and heavy rainfall at isolated places over north coastal Andhra Pradesh.

On 4th December: Light to moderate rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy rainfall & extremely heavy falls at isolated places very likely over south coastal Odisha and heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places over north coastal Andhra Pradesh, north coastal Odisha & adjoining interior districts and also over coastal districts of Gangetic west Bengal.

On 5th December: Light to moderate rainfall at many places with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places likely over Gangetic West Bengal & north Odisha and heavy rainfall at isolated places over Assam & Meghalaya and Tripura.

On 6th December: Light to moderate rainfall at many places with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places likely over Assam & Meghalaya, Mizoram and Tripura.

(ii) Wind warning

  • Squally wind speed reaching 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph likely to prevail over southeast Bay of Bengal & adjoining the Andaman Sea during next 6 hours.
  • It would further increase to wind speed reaching 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph over southeast & adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal, from 3 rd December morning.
  • Gale winds speed reaching 65-75 kmph gusting to 85 kmph likely to prevail over the central Bay of Bengal from the morning of 3rd December evening and gradually increase becoming 90-100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph over northwest & adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal from the morning of 4th December for the subsequent 24 hours.
  • Squally wind speed reaching 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph likely to commence along & off North Andhra Pradesh – Odisha coasts from the mid-night of 3rd December and increase gradually becoming 70-80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph from 4th morning, for the subsequent 12 hours.
  • Squally wind speed reaching 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph also likely to commence along & off West Bengal coast from 4th December morning and become Gale wind speed reaching 60-70 kmph gusting to 80 kmph from the evening of 4th December for the subsequent 12 hours.

(iii) Sea condition

  • Sea condition will be very rough to High over southeast & adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal, Andaman & Nicobar Islands & Andaman Sea during next 12 hours.
  • Sea condition would be High over central Bay of Bengal on 3rd December and High to very High over west-central & northwest Bay of Bengal from the early morning of 4th December for the subsequent 24 hours.
  • Sea condition will be rough to very rough over along & off North Andhra Pradesh – Odisha coast from the mid-night of 3rd December and become High to very High from 4th Afternoon, for the subsequent 12 hours.
  • It will be rough to very rough along & off West Bengal coast from 4th morning and High from the same evening for the subsequent 12 hours.

(iv) Fishermen Warning (in association with the likely intensification of the system)

Fishermen are advised not to venture into the Andaman Sea on 2nd December 2021, into southeast & adjoining the east-central Bay of Bengal on 2nd & 3rd December, over west-central & northwest Bay of Bengal and along & off north Andhra Pradesh – Odisha- West Bengal coasts during 3rd – 5th December 2021 (Graphics enclosed).

(v) Advisory to along & offshore Installations

The off-shore & alongshore operations along north Andhra Pradesh, Odisha & West Bengal coasts are advised to be judiciously regulated on 3rd December and to be suspended on 4th December 2021, to ensure the safety of life & property.

(vi) EXPECTED IMPACT & ACTION SUGGESTED

  • Major damage to thatched houses/ huts.
  • Breaking of tree branches, uprooting of trees.
  • Minor damage to power and communication lines.
  • Localized Flooding of roads, inundation and waterlogging in low-lying areas and closure of underpasses mainly in urban areas of the affected region.
  • Occasional reduction in visibility due to heavy rainfall.
  • Disruption of traffic in major cities due to waterlogging in roads leading to increased travel time.
  • Minor damage to kutcha roads.
  • Possibilities of damage to the vulnerable structure.
  • Localized Landslides/Mudslides
  • Damage to horticulture and standing crops in some areas due to inundation. Damage to banana, Papaya & Moringa (Drumstick) trees.

  • 2. Action Suggested
  • Total suspension of fishing operations.
  • Check for traffic congestion on your route before leaving for your destination.
  • Follow any traffic advisories that are issued in this regard.
  • Avoid going to areas that face waterlogging problems often.
  • Avoid staying invulnerable structure.
  • Harvest the ripen crops like Paddy & Horticultural crops and also secure the harvested crops securely from the damage due to rain and strong winds.
