Villagers host Frog Dance To Woo Rain God In Odisha’s Cuttack dist

Cuttack:  Worried over the inadequate rain during this moonsoon season, the residents of Gadadharpur  village under Athagada block here organised a frog dance for appeasing the rain god for rain.

Even when the the monsoon season is close to end, several areas in Athagarh block has not received adequate rain due to which the villagers have not been able to start work this kharif season.

The villagers have resort to the old tradition of  frogs dance, and the youths of the village roll on a muddy road, with the hope that it would bring rain for them.

According to them, the croaking sounds made by frogs during the ritual would alert god of rain ‘Indra Devata’ so that he would shower rain in the village. They believe that  the rain god cannot tolerate the croaking of the dancing frogs and will definitely bring forth the rain to the earth.

They said that the tradition of frog dance has been in the village for hundreds of years.
