Rourkela: A team of Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) reached the Steel City on Saturday and launched rescue operation to find out at least five youths of Sitalpada slum in the area, who had gone missing inside a tunnel of the Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP).

The victims identified as Krishna, Raju Naik, Suraj Singh, Suresh and Gahanu of the slum which is located in the vicinity of the steel plant had sneaked into the Outfall-9 tunnel of it on June 3. However, Raju’s wife lodged a case at Udit Nagar Police Station in connection with the incident yesterday after neither he nor his associates came out of the tunnel.

Acting upon the complaint, Udit Nagar Police first tried to rescue the victim with the help of fire officials and later called up ODRAF team to assist.

On the other hand some locals in the area have suspected that the victims could have sneaked into the tunnel to steal scrap items. Stealing scrap items from the plant and selling them makes the major source of income for the residents of Sitalpada slum, they alleged.
