Five jumbos swept away by flood water in Mahanadi in Cuttack

Athagarh: In yet another flood related mishap in the state, a herd of wild elephants was swept away in Mahanadi water near Munduli on Monday.

As per the report, a herd of at least 20 jumbos which had sneaked into Athagarh forest last night was trying to return to Chandaka Forest by wading through Mahanadi when the mishap took place this morning.

While the exact number of elephants which were swept away by the river which is in spate, is yet to be ascertained, some eyewitnesses feared that at least five jumbos could have fallen victim to the mishap. One jumbo was seen trying to swim to the river bank near Anantapur, they added.

Forest officials reached the spot later to save one of the elephants and launched rescue operation to trace the rest.
