MahanadiNew Delhi: Agami Odisha, a leading socio-cultural organization, launched its five-day long ‘Satyagraha’ for the rights of the people of Odisha on Mahanadi river water at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on Tuesday.

On the first day of this large public protest scheduled to be held from August 8-12 witnessed around 200 activists from Odisha taking part in a rally holding idols of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra at the venue and chanting slogans for immediate implementation of  National Green tribunal (NGT)’s direction to the Chhattisgarh government.

Named as ‘Mahanadi Bachao Satyagraha’ and scheduled to be inaugurated today by four renowned freedom fighters from the State, the campaign would also be attended by the Odisha MPs on its second day on Wednesday.

Basudev Bhatt, convener, Agami Odisha said the the basic objective of the Satyagraha is to persuade the Chhattisgarh Government to adhere to the NGT directive asking the Raman Singh government to stop construction work of 31 projects over the Mahanadi. It also aims at preventing Mahanadi from becoming another Cauvery and affecting the relationship between Odisha and Chhatishgarh.

As illegal construction on the river Mahanadi is a direct attack on Odisha people’s rights, Bhatt demanded the immediate intervention of PM Narendra Modi and Union Minister Uma Bharti in sorting out all differences between Odisha and Chhatishgarh over the issue.
