First cyclone of 2023 likely to form over Bay of Bengal this month, To be called ‘Mocha’

A cyclone called Mocha is likely to form over the Bay of Bengal in the second week of May, predicted the US weather forecast model GFS.

Bhubaneswar: A cyclone is likely to form over the Bay of Bengal in the second week of May, predicted the US weather forecast model Global Forecast System (GFS) and the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). If the cyclone is formed then it will be called as ‘Mocha’.

The Cyclone Mocha is likely to form by May 11, said the weather forecast model of Windy.

On the other hand, International Meteorologist Jason Nichols has estimated the possibility of a storm in the second week of May. A low pressure area may develop over the South Bay of Bengal by the end of this week or early next week. Jason Nicholls has revealed that there is a high probability that the low pressure will take the form of a cyclonic storm.

The cyclone will likely have an impact from East India to Bangladesh and Myanmar. The Meteorologists are keeping an eye on the changes on the low pressure.

Meanwhile, the Indian Meteorological Department has not given any indication about a cyclone forming in the Bay of Bengal. The IMD has estimated that a low pressure area may develop in the first week of May. A low pressure area is likely to form over South Bay of Bengal by May 5. It might intensify into depression. However, there is no clear information about whether it will turn into a cyclone or not. After the formation of low pressure area, it will clear whether the cyclone will form or not. IMD DG Muthananjaya Mohapatra said that this low pressure area will not have any impact on Odisha.

Yemen has named the possible cyclone in the Bay of Bengal as ‘Mocha’. Last year on May 8, the storm Asani formed in the Bay of Bengal. It was initially predicted to hit the Andhra-Odisha coast. Later, the storm changed course and dropped into a deep depression. It crossed the coast of Andhra Pradesh. Whether there will be a cyclone in the Bay of Bengal or not and its possible outbreak cannot be accurately predicted for now.
