Fire Service Martyr’s Day observed in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: Like previous years, Odisha Fire Service is observing Fire Service Martyr’s Day on 14th April and Fire Service Week from 14th April to 20th April.

On 14th April the Martyr’s das was observed at Odisha Fire and Disaster Response Academy, Bhubaneswar. D.G of Police, Fire Services, Odisha, M Akhaya, IPS, and A.D.G of Police, Fire Services, Dr. Soumya Mishra, Chief Fire Officer, Odisha, Maheswar Swain, Chief Fire Officer (FPW), Sukanta Sethi and other senior officers attended and paid homage to those brave fire fighters who lost their lives on line of duty last year.

The officers laid wreath at Sahid Statue. D.G of Police, Fire Services readout the names of Martyr’s and observed 02 minutes silence. In view of covid pandemic, the Martyr’s Day was observed in a simple manner followed by a prize giving ceremony. 05 (five) officers and men of different ranks adjudged best for the year 2020 were awarded with trophies and cash prize by D.G Fire Services, Odisha. Besides, the personnel who proved best in professional duty meet held on 6-7/04/2021 were also awarded with trophies and cash prize. 6 (Six) retired Fire Personnel who have engaged themselves in social activities after retirement were also felicitated at their natives by the senior officers of Fire Service. During the Fire Service Week, steps are being taken from Fire Station level to create fire safety consciousness among the general public.

During observation of Fire Service Week from 14th April to 20th April Fire Service personnel are asked to conduct mock evacuation drills in high-rise buildings, malls, shopping complexes, hospitals etc. to create public awareness on fire safety. Besides, the officers shall undertake fire safety inspection drive in different fire prone occupancies to educate the owners and occupants on requirement of Fire Safety Recommendation and Fire Safety Certificate for public safety.

Today Fire Service Martyr’s Day is being observed throughout the Country. It was on this day in the year-1944, a major fire accident was occurred in a Cargo Ship named “Fort Stikine” at Bombay Dock. The fire service personnel of Bombay Fire Service were pressed into the service. During firefighting 66 (sixty six) brave fire fighters lost their lives. This was the only instance in history of India fire service where 66 firemen lost their lives on line of duty. To pay homage to those brave firefighters and firefighters who lost their lives every year on line duty, Fire Service Martyr’s Day is observed on 14th April. Besides, Fire Service Week is also observed from 14th April to 20th April. During this week the General Public are made fire conscious through propaganda and publicity. Demonstration mock evacuation drills, Distribution of leaflets, T.V.talks, Radio talks are held to inculcate fire safety awareness among the people and capacity building to prevent loss of lives and properties.
