FIR against 5 CESU officials over elephant deaths in Odisha

Dhenkanal: Forest Department on Sunday filed FIR against five officials of Central Electricity Supply Utility (CESU) in connection with the death of seven elephants which were killed after coming in contact with a livewire in the district yesterday.

According to reports, the FIR has been filed at Kantabania Police Station against CESU Superintending Engineer, Dhenkanal electrical circle, Naresh Chandra Patnaik, Manager (El.) Nihar Panigrahi, junior engineer, Meramundali division, Sanjay Kumar Mohanty, Chainpal SDO Artatrana Nayak and lineman Meramumndali section Phiroj Panda.

The complaint has been filed under Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.

Earlier in the day, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had ordered for a Crime Branch probe into the incident.

Notably, seven wild jumbos were killed after coming in contact with a live electric wire at Kamalanga under Motanga police limits of the district on Friday night.

Taking serious note of the incident, CESU has suspended Naresh Chandra Patnaik, Artatrana Nayak and Phiroj Panda. Besides, it terminated the job of Junior Engineer, Meramundali division, Sanjay Kumar Mohanty for dereliction of duty.

Likewise, the Forest department has suspended three of its field staff including Dhenkanal Range Officer Prasanna Biswal. Forester Prabhakar Rana and forest guard Girish Chandra Dehuri working Meramundali forest range have also been placed under suspension.
