Fine quality timber worth lakhs seized by Forest Dept in Balangir

Balangir: Launching a crackdown on illegal timber trade in the district, the Forest Department officials seized sawn timbers worth lakhs conducting a raid at a resident’s house in Palace Line Para in Balangir town on Tuesday.

A team of forest officials led by DFO Sameer Kumar Satapathy raided the house of one Satyendra Pratap Singhdeo in the morning after Balangir Forest Division got specific information on his involvement in illegal timber business.

During the raid fine-quality timber used in furniture and woodwork including teak, sal and piasal were found on the spot and were seized.

Informing on the raid, Satpathy said the accused was running an illegal timber business in the district after bringing these costly timbers from neighbouring West Bengal State. He was under Forest Department’s scanner for last couple of months.

The accused could not have been caught in the incident as he was absent at his residence at the time of raid.
