Female elephant found dead in Keonjhar forest, Anthrax infection feared

Keonjhar: In yet another case of pachyderm death in the State, a female elephant was found dead in Gayalmunda forest under Ghatagaon Forest Range in Keonjhar district today.

The dead elephant, which is ascertained to be middle-aged, was spotted by some locals last evening. They immediately called up forest officials.

During the examination of the carcass by the Veterinary team which accompanied the forest officials to the spot later in the night, found the female elephant to be pregnant at the time of death.

While the exact cause of the death of the elephant is not known Anthrax infection is being suspected behind the incident, said forest department sources.

Keonjhar DFO and a Veterinary team from Similipal have sent the sample of the carcass for laboratory test, after reaching the spot to unearth the cause of the death.
