Puri: At least two members of a family including a minor girl were charred to death and another sustained critical burn injury after some unidentified miscreants torched their house in Danagahiri Muslim slum under Pipili police limits in the district last night.

The deceased are identified as Md Abul (65) and his daughter Najo (12). The injured is Abul’s wife Rahima (55).

The attack took place at around 12.30 AM in the night while the family was sleeping inside their small shop cum house. It is being suspected that some unidentified miscreants first locked up the door of the house from outside and then torched it by sprinkling kerosene. The victims failed to come out of the house and sustained critical burn injuries.

The trio was rescued after a fire brigade team reached the spot getting intimation from some neighbour of the family. They were rushed to Pipili CHC and then shifted to Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar first and SCB Medical in Cuttack later, where the father-daughter duo succumbed to the injuries. The condition of the mother is still critical with 90 percent burn injuries.

Angry locals staged a road blockade on Pipili-Delang road following the incident and demanded justice to the family along with free treatment. The blockade was removed after Pipili IIC Sarat Sahoo reached the spot and assured them of action against the guilty.
