Farmer ends life in Nuapada over crop loss, loan burden

Nuapada: Distressed over crop loss and loan burden another farmer ended his life by hanging himself to death in Jenjara village under Budhipali panchayat in the district on Saturday.

The deceased farmer has been identified as Aganu Rout.

Aganu who had cultivated paddy in five acres of his land this year by taking loans from different sources including village money lenders as well as cooperative societies, suffered crop damage due to drought and brown plant hopper (BPH) pest attack at a later stage. Worried over repaying the loan amount of around Rs 50,000 Rout went missing from his home last night. His body was found hanging from a tree in his farmland this morning.

Following the suicide of Aganu locals have demanded that the administration should not make any delay in declaring the district as drought hit.

At least 8 farmers have committed suicide in the district this year due to crop damage and loan burden caused by drought situation, speaking the volume of the menace.
