Farmer ends life in Balasore over crop loss, loan burden

Balasore: A farmer hung himself to death allegedly over crop loss and growing loan burden in Balarampur village under Soro block in Balasore district last night.

The deceased has been identified as Niranjan Satapathy (55), a resident of the same locality.

As per the family members of the deceased, he had taken loans from various sources including private parties and banks to cultivate paddy crop in his 22 acres of land. But much to his bad luck he suffered crop damage caused by cyclone ‘Bulbul’ subsequently and incurred a massive loss.

Finding him unable to repay the loan, the victim hung him from a tree located near his farmland by a rope and died at around 4 am today.

Some locals spotted the body this morning and informed the police.

A case of unnatural death has been lodged in connection with the incident and a probe is underway.
