Balasore: Tension ran high in Paschimbada village under Jaleswar Police Station in Balasore district today after a farmer was electrocuted to death and locals staged road blockade demanding compensation.
The incident took place in the morning while the deceased identified as Surendra Jena was on his way to irrigate his farmland near the village. He came in contact with a high power transmission line which had been snapped from a private lift irrigation point and died on the spot.
After the news of Jena’s death spread in the village, his family members along with locals blocked the Paschimbad-Jaleswar Main Road by keeping his body. Holding the owner of the concerned private lift irrigation point and the electricity board responsible for the death of the victim they demanded Rs 20 lakh compensation for his next of kin.
The blockade was removed only after Jaleswar Tehsildar Abhimanyu Panda reached the spot and assured the agitators to look into the matter.
