Berhampur: A woman died and husband turned critical after a farmer couple tried to commit suicide in Sundarapalli village under Dharakote Police Station area in Ganjam district on Sunday. Crop loss and loan burden is suspected to be behind the couple’s self-killing bid.
The couple identified as Kabiraj Barad and wife Laxmi Barad consumed poison this morning and turned critical. Relatives of the couple rushed them first to Aska Community Health Centre (CHC) where doctors declared Laxmi dead.
Kabiraj was shifted to MKCG Medical College in Berhampur later on due to deteriorating condition and he remains to be serious.
While the exact reason behind the suicide of the couple is not known, their family members informed that Kabiraj suffered a crop loss this year. While he is a sharecropper and had loaned huge amount of money from different sources for farming, the growing loan burden could have driven him to take the extreme step along with wife.
Dharakote Police have reached Aska CHC and investigating into the incident.
