Farmer attempts to commit suicide over ‘crop failure’ in Balangir

Balangir: Tension ran high in Kuliadaro village under Turekela block in the district today after a farmer attempted to commit suicide due to financial loss incurred by crop damage.

The victim has been identified as Bhagat Sagaria.

Bhagat, who went to attend nature’s call in a field located near his farmland in the morning and consumed pesticide there in a bid to end his life. He was later rescued by his family members in a critical condition from his farmland and rushed to Kantabanji CHC.

The victim was later shifted to Balangir DHH due to deteriorating condition.

As per the victim’s elder brother Hira Sagaria, he had taken loans from a number of moneylenders in Kantabanji area for cotton cultivation. However, as he suffered a crop failure at a later stage and found him unable to repay the loans.

After remaining under immense mental stress due to growing financial burden for last couple of days the chose to take the extreme step today, he added.

Police have lodged a case in the incident and started investigation.
