Family attacked for protesting ‘bamboo cutting’; 1 critical, 3 injured

Cuttack: An elderly man turned critical and three others in his family were hurt after they were attacked by a group of men in Mugabhanga village under Cuttack Sadar police limits for opposing unauthorised bamboo cutting on Saturday.

The victims have been identified as Jhari Dalai (65), his younger son Sameer Dalai, nephew Prakash Dalai and sister-in-law Jhunu Dalai.

As per a complaint filed by  Jhari’s son Sambun Dalai with police, his father opposed a neighbour Kalindi Dalei while he was busy in cutting bamboo trees along with his son Durga Prasad Dalai from a plot owned by him in the village. The plot happens to be a disputed one and a case is sub judice in this connection.

Kalindi indulged in a heated argument with Jhari following his objection to bamboo cutting and later attacked him with sharp weapons by teaming up with his son and two others namely, Sapani Dalai and Prasanta Dalai. As Jhari’s family members came out for his rescue, the attackers even didn’t spare them and attacked by hurling bricks, in which three more persons were hurt.

Jhari who sustained critical head injury was rushed to a nearby hospital by his family members along with the other injured and his condition is stated to be out of danger, now.

Police have started investigation in the case.
