Fake MVIs detained in Odisha’s Jaleswar

Balasore: Five youths accused of impersonating as Motor Vehicle Inspector (MVI) have been detained at Jaleswar in Odisha’s Balasore district on Saturday. However, the identity of the fake MVIs is not revealed by the police.

According to reports, the accused, posing as MVIs, intercepted a tourist bus near Lokanath Toll Gate at Jaleswar, the gateway to Odisha from West Bengal. They asked the bus staff to show documents and later sought penalty for violating traffic rules under recently amended Motor Vehicle Act, 2019.

When the passengers opposed, the fake MVIs allegedly thrashed them and looted over Rs 40,000 cash and gold from the passengers.

Irate over the incident, the tourists staged a road blockade on NH-60 near the Loknath Toll Gate. Hundreds of vehicles were left stranded both sides of NH.

On being informed, Jaleswar police reached the spot, pacified the protesters and detained the accused.

The injured have been admitted to Jaleswar Government Hospital.
