Nabarangpur: A 16-month-old infant was branded with heated turmeric pieces wrapped in cloth by his aunt in a bid to cure him from fever in Nishinahandi village of Nandahandi block in the district on Monday. This is the second case of faith-healing gone wrong within last two months in the district.

As per reports, the infant’s parents Damu Majhi and Netra Majhi took him to a quack who had prescribed traditional medicines to the infant. However, as the fever did not recede and alleging negligence in taking care of the infant, his aunt branded him with heated turmeric pieces on his head, nose and neck.

The infant was rushed to the Nabarangpur hospital after his temperature did not drop on Tuesday.

Dr Debabrata Dakua, doctor at Nabarangpur district headquarters hospital told that the infant had high fever when he was brought to the hospital on Tuesday night. After check-up it was found that the infant was suffering from pneumonia and anaemia. Further it was found that, he was also branded, which also leads to septicaemia or poisoning of blood. He added saying, though the health condition of the infant is stable now, he will be referred to Koraput Medical College and Hospital.

Notably, there have been many instances of infants being branded with hot iron by faith-healers (disari) to cure ailments in Nabarangpur.
