Jharigam, ambulance failsNabarangpur:   In yet another case of poor infrastructure facilities in the rural areas of Odisha, a pregnant woman was carried by her family members on a cot for three kilometers here on Friday as the ambulance failed to reach her place due to the poor muddy road connecting the village.

The incident occurred in Bharuamunda village of Chakalapadara Panchayat under Jharigam block in the district when 23 year old Shanti, wife of Dushmanta Majhi of the village, suffered labour pain.

Her family members called the 102 ambulance service to take her to the Hospital, but it couldn’t turn up due to poor road connectivity to the village. The condition of the road is so bad that even an auto rickshaw cannot reach the village.

Dusmanta and his family members had no other choice except to carry Shanti on a cot for nearly three kilometers up to Haladigundi Chhak, where they found an auto rickshaw to take her to Ichapur Primary Health Centre.

Shanti delivered a baby boy at the health centre. The condition of both the mother and new born baby is reportedly stable.

It is not an isolated case; a number of such cases have been reported in the tribal dominated Nabarangpur district in the recent past when pregnant women had to be carried in bicycles or cots to the nearest health centres as 102 ambulance did not turn up in time for various reasons.
