Eviction drive begins in Bhubaneswar after 30 years of legal battle

Bhubaneswar: After thirty years of legal battle, the officials of Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC), Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) and the General Administration Department began an eviction drive on 1 acre of encroached land near AG Square here on Friday.

The buildings of Indira English Medium School as well as Nehru Yuva Kendra (NYK) were demolished during the drive.

Both the buildings were illegally set up on the said encroached land in the heart of the city, sources said.

The eviction drive began at 6 AM after 30 years of legal battle, a BMC official said. As many as 8 numbers of JCB machines, 8 Tippers, 4 Tractors and over 200 persons were engaged in the drive. Besides, adequate police personnel were deployed on the spot to avoid any untoward incident in this connection.

The government has decided to construct an ‘Urban Museum’ in the said land, said a BDA official.
