EOW Arrests Mastermind Of Bank Fraud in Odisha’s Balasore

Balasore: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Crime Branch today arrested the mastermind of bank fraud in Remuna branch of Bank of India.

Police said that the accused identified as Brahma Jyoti Behera with his associates had misappropriated Rs 1.32 crore of two pensioners who had already died.

Police had earlier arrested Pravat Kumar Das, the business correspondent of the bank and Durga Charan Panda, the former branch manager for the fraud.

Police said that the pension amount of a pensioner Parsuram Giri was being credited to the Bank of India account though Giri passed away in December 2014.

“The accused continued to transfer excessive amounts of pension amounting Rs 65 lakh to Giri’s account. Besides the accused also continued to transfer money amounting Rs 67 lakh to the account of the wife of another pensioner who died in 2014,” said a police official.

Police said that the accused Brahma Jyoti Behera is the son of Sabitri Behera and the three accused had managed to fraudulently obtain the ATM cards of both the deceased and continued to withdraw the cash from ATM kiosks.

Later a case was registered with the EOW in December 2018 on the basis of a complaint by branch’s senior manager Swaraj Mohanty.
