Pipili: In a sad incident, an engineering student was witnessed recently working as a daily wage labourer in Puri district of Odisha to pay her hostel fees. As per reports, as she could not pay the fees the authorities have not issued her with the Certificate, for which she is working under the MGNREGA scheme.
As per reports, Lozi Behera is a student at a private Engineering College of Khordha district. She passed HSC with 36 percent in 2013 and later admitted to Pipili College for +2. In the annual +2 exam she failed for once and cleared the course securing 43 per cent marks in 2016.
Lozi then took admission in the private Engineering College as a Civil Engineering Diploma student. Now, though she has cleared her exam, she was denied a certificate as she is yet to clear her hostel fees.
Finding no other way Lozi reportedly came forward to work as a daily wage labourer so that she can earn money to pay her hostel fees after which she would be given the certificate.
Daughter of Lokanath Behera, Lozi belongs to Goradapidi village under Delang block in Puri district. In the family, besides her old parents she has four sisters. She reportedly works as a mason.
Lozi has been witnessed working as a labourer for the last 20 days. Further, it has been reported that the Sarpanch had assured her of providing a mobile phone after working for 15 days, a cow shed for working for 20 days and a house under the Indira Awas Yojana for working more than a month. However, she is reportedly yet to get her remuneration although she has worked for 20 days. On the other hand, the sarpanch has said that as he had not received money to pay to the workers he has not paid.
It is an irony to witness such cases despite presence of many government schemes for education of the poor students.
