Eminent Odia Musician Prafulla Kar Dies At 83

Bhubaneswar: Eminent Odia musician and Padma Shri Prafulla Kar passed away late on Sunday night at 83 due to a cardiac arrest.

Reportedly, Kar breathed his last at his Satya Nagar residence. His last rites will be performed at Puri Swargadwar on Monday.

Kar was born on February 16, 1939. He is survived by his wife Manorama Kar and children Mahaprasad Kar, Sandhyadipa Kar and Mahadeep Kar.

He was an Odia musician, singer, lyricist, writer and columnist. He received Padma Shri in 2015 for his contribution in the field of arts.

He was born into musician family in Puri, Bengal Presidency. His uncle Khetra Mohan Kar was a renowned Tabla Player.

Kar has worked as a music director and as singer in 70 Odia movies as well as in four Bangla films. The maestro had also composed music for numerous Odissi dance dramas and ballets. Some of his most popular songs in every Odia household are ‘Kamala Desha Rajakumara’, ‘Kalia mo dehe boli de to deha kala’, ‘Mo priya tharu kie’.

A pall of gloom descended on the Ollywood fraternity as the afterlife of renowned musician Prafulla Kar is an irreparable loss for the Odia music industry.
