Rayagada: In yet another incident making it difficult to stomach Odisha Government’s tall claim of making much progress in healthcare sector, an expectant mother was forced to deliver her baby on the roadside, due to the unavailability of an ambulance, in Jamupadar village under Kalyansinghpur block of Rayagada district on Sunday.

The woman identified as Golapi Hikaka was in her final months of pregnancy and developed labour pain very late in the night on Saturday. However, her family members kept waiting till early morning today and called up the 102 Ambulance which is available under Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY). However, no ambulance turned up for the assistance of the expectant mother for long. Finding no other option available, the woman’s family members carried her on shoulder and set out for Kalyansighpur Community Health Centre (CHC) on foot. After covering a distance of at least two kilometres on shoulder the woman also walked for a few metres to the hospital and gave birth to a girl child on the roadside.

A 102 ambulance reached out to the family only after two hours and rushed the mother and the newborn to Kalyansinghpur CHC after picking them up from the road.

However, both the mother and the child are doing well now said the doctors treating them at the hospital.
