Balasore: In yet another case of human-animal conflict over dwelling place in the State, a herd of wild elephants strayed into Dholpur village under Nilagiri police limits last night and damaged several boundary walls and destroyed large scale of crop fields.

As per the report, jumbos of various age groups sneaked into the village from a nearby area very late in the night in search of food. The villagers reacted immediately and called up forest officials for help.

However, till the forest staff and Sabuja Vahini members reached the spot the herd had caused substantial damage to houses and standing crops.

Later, villagers detained the officials protesting their dereliction of duty as well as failure to track the elephant movement.

The officials were released only after police rushed to the spot and intervened.
